| Special Olympics Torch in Fremont |
|
The Fremont Police Department kicks off the Special Olympics Torch Run through Northern California June 8th at 7:15am. |
|
The law enforcement community, including the Fremont Police Department, has a longstanding relationship with the Special Olympics. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a year-round fundraising campaign, which culminates with the carrying of the Special Olympics torch to the Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games, to be held this year in Berkeley, June 9-11. Funds are raised through a variety of activities, including "Tip-A-Cop" events at various local restaurants. So far this year, the Fremont Police Department has raised over $5,000 in donations for the Special Olympics, which go toward sponsoring local athletes to attend the Summer Games.
Law enforcement agencies in southern Alameda County will help bring the Special Olympics torch to Berkeley by carrying it through their respective cities on Thursday, June 9, starting in Fremont. At 7:15 that morning, there will be a short ceremony and photo opportunity at the Fremont Police Department at 2000 Stevenson Boulevard. Representatives from the Fremont Police Department will then carry the torch up Paseo Padre Parkway from Stevenson Blvd. to Decoto Road, where they will then pass the torch to the Union City Police Department, just past the city limits.
The public is welcome to come out and cheer the runners on along the course. For more information, or to make a donation to the Special Olympics, contact Sergeant Clarise Lew at 510-790-6681 or clew@ci.fremont.ca.us.
