Don't Become a Holiday Crime Statistic |
|
|
Since vehicle burglaries and other property crimes tend to increase in December, the Fremont Police Department has some suggestions that may keep you and your car from becoming a statistic this holiday season:
Vehicle Safety Tips
- Always lock your car and roll up the windows.
- Park in a well-lit, populated area.
- If you have a garage, use it! Don’t leave your car parked outside if you don’t have to.
- Do not leave packages, purses, wallets, computers, DVD’s, CD's, cell phones or any other valuables in your vehicle because they will attract criminals. If you must do so, place them out of sight or in the trunk before you arrive at your destination.
- Alarm systems, steering wheel locks and other anti-theft devices are highly recommended.
- When parking your car, be aware of who and what is parked around you. Be especially aware of vans and other vehicles that may be concealing someone.
- When walking to your car, have your keys in hand to help you make a quick entry. Lock the door as soon as you get inside.
- Be careful when loading groceries, packages and children into your car. It is easy to be distracted at this time, thus allowing a criminal to surprise you.
- Don't carry so much that you cannot see if someone approaches you or cannot use your hands to defend yourself if necessary.
- To avoid becoming the victim of a carjacking, do not sit in your parked vehicle any longer than necessary. People who read, eat, sleep, etc., in their car become vulnerable targets.
- Never leave your car unattended with the keys inside. It only takes a second for a thief to jump in and take your car.
- To avoid being seen during these crimes, criminals sometimes remove, break or loosen light bulbs in carports, parking lots and driveways. Please replace or report any lights that are not working to apartment management, your homeowners association or whoever is responsible for lighting in your area.
- Make sure the area around your vehicle is clear from obstructions. Bushes and trees should be trimmed away from parking areas to prevent hiding places for criminals.
Personal Safety Tips
- Limit the amount of cash you carry, and don't carry more than one credit card at a time.
- If you must use an ATM, select one that is inside of a store or in a highly visible and populated area.
- Travel and shop with someone else whenever possible.
- Walk purposely with your head up. Be aware of what is going on around you.
- Rather than carry valuables in a purse, women should consider wearing a fanny pack hidden under a jacket.
- If someone attempts to rob you, don't argue with or resist the robber. Give the robber your valuables.
Please report suspicious persons or activity to the Fremont Police Department by dialing 790-6800. If you see a robbery, burglary, car theft or any other serious crime in progress, dial 9-1-1 from a regular phone or 791-4200 from a cellular phone to reach the Fremont Police emergency dispatch center.
Have a safe holiday season!!
